August 30 Summer fun stymied by bitchiness! Whee!I don't know about you but I've been working my tailfeathers off this summer! I've been to New York, Cancun, Santa Monica and Singapore. I've covered the WCG US Open, Pac-Man World Championships, WCG Pan-American Championship, E3, WCG Asian Championship and Penny Arcade Expo. And now... it is time for a little R n R.
I'm in sunny Eastern Washington for a long weekend. I meant to leave on the 3 hour drive around 9am this morning but several factors conspired against me:
Now I am in this hotel I used to love in a resort town I used to visit as a kid and am hating it. It's outrageously expensive for a craptastic facility. Seriously it's so old they use real keys...like made out of metal. The TV is an old standard def p.o.s., and it's just yucky and I hate it. Yes, I have been spoiled by nice hotels. And I think someone breathed their germs on me because my throat hurts. And I miss my PAX friends.
Okay all done whining. What do you think--time to lose the H3 blog theme and go back to good ol' green? or keep it up til Sept 25?
August 28 Nerd OverloadDid you ever look out at the sea of nerds at PAX and just think: "It's like they took one nerd and cloned him 40,000 times."? I have. The good news is that PAX was barely smelly this year thanks to a large space and splendid ventilation. There were pockets of funk, but we hardly even needed the ChiX booth freshener.
Highlights
Lowlights August 23 PAX baby PAX baby, one two three! That made no sense, I know. I'm sort of giddy with PAX anticipation (would that be Panticipation?).
Xbox is doing a bunch of cool junk this weekend, so here's what's what in Jet City.
Friday
2pm - PAX opens
7pm - Trix moderates the "Girls and Games, the Growing Role of Women in the Game Industry" panel in Suite B.
9pm - Trix hosts Freedom Fest at Gameworks. Freedom Fest is my fun euphemism for my re-bachelorette party. Y'all are invited.
Saturday
PAX goodness all day long. Come by the Xbox booth to learn more about GamerchiX, World Cyber Games and kickass upcoming games like Mass Effect and Halo 3. Major Nelson moderates a podcasting panel too!
Sunday
PAX goodness. The chiX will have airfreshner at our table, so if the gamerfunk gets too bad, stop by to refresh your nasal passages with floral goodness. August 19 Rockin' Wii BoogieBoogie is soooo fun. First, I kicked butt on "Oops I Did it Again" high atop Sokitoomi Tower. And then, kids.... after saving up 750 tokens I earned shakin' my ass on "ABC", "That's the Way I Like It" etc to buy a new song... THEN I did "Fergalicious" in the Lost Temple of Funk. And I made that wii my bitch! A million frickin' points! Oh YEAH!
This weekend I had a bbq with some of the local GamerchiX. Really really looking forward to seeing lots of the girls at PAX--we are over 3,000 chiX strong now!
If you're going to PAX on Friday come watch the Women in Gaming panel at 7pm... I'll be moderating. Not sure exactly what that means, but I'm fairly certain I'm up to the task of breaking up any catfights that should arise. Actually, I'm certain I'll WIN any catfights that come up. August 17 Wanted: Xbox AmbassadorsThat's right. The time has come. With the arrival of Halo 3 there will be loads of people getting on Xbox LIVE for the very first time. August 13 An insidious evil...Romance novels. Personally I haven't touched one since we used to pass them around 7th grade algebra with the dirty parts highlighted. But yesterday I was sitting in my local grocery store Starbucks and the only available seat was right across from the Series Romance section of the little bookstore. All I could think was "No wonder chicks are messed up!" There were clear trends, which in turn revealed some very disturbing things:
Sub-genre #1 - The rich man. Many titles featured "CEO" "Sheik" "Playboy" "Surgeon" "Prince" and "Tycoon". The premise of course is a lovely but naive girl is swept off her feet by rich man. She resists him at first because of course she's "spunky" but then she gives in and lets him call all the shots and buy her sparkly things. It's the only route to happiness of course. Barf.
Sub-genre #2 - Babies. I know this seems implausible, but I swear to you there were 15 books of this type on the one shelf I examined. The premise is: dude and chick have one-night stand. She gets knocked up. She has a baby and this leads the dude (who of course is fabulously weathly, famous and/or royal) to realize that his baby mama is the true love of his life and he marries her and they live happily ever after. Any concerns about the teenage pregnancy problem? No? The message here is if you can just get a hold of his sperm he's yours forever.
Sub-genre #3 - God. There was a whole bunch of "Inspirational" romances. I can only imagine that these involve longing glances, hymn-singing and verse-quoting. Can't imagine there's a lot of sex in these.
Anyway. I found Sub-genre number 1 to be unsurprising but pretty damn backwards, number 2 to be downright dangerous, and number 3 just plain odd.
I know that women really do buy these things and devour them... but I don't know any of them personally. I'm curious...what's the appeal to grown women?
August 05 So long, Singapore! Here are my highlights of Singapore:
Lowlights:
Master Chief let me touch his gun!Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson were at the WCG Asian Championship today and I felt up his (MC's) pecs. He also let me touch his gun and call him John. But when I made a grab for his butt he got pissed. Trixie DENIED!
I wore my Halo 3 tshirt that's about five sizes too big so I look like a major dork in the pic. But it's MASTER CHIEF! August 02 Singapore rules! No not the arcane Singpore 'rules'. It just RULES. I think I want to move here!
and our first video from Sinagpore. Video Monkey tried something new with time-lapse and it's really cool!
Finally tried a Singapore Sling last night. Was underwhelmed. It's too frou-frou even for me. The Tiger beer is delish and packs a wallop though! It's so freaking hot here I took THREE showers yesterday.
On deck for today: breakfast at the hotel, some cool stage matches at the convention center, Opening Ceremoniies of Asian Championship this evening! We're hoping for a chance to explore Chinatown sometime in there as well! August 01 TriXie's Travels - Singapore Day OneYou guys saw all this first, but here's the PG-13 version from Xbox.com.
Today is the Opening Ceremonies --not for the Asian Championships as I'd thought, but the Singapore Finals. There will be yet another Opening Ceremony tomorrow. This one is for the big show featuring gamers from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam! It's going to be exciting!
In which we explore Little IndiaDespite sleeping on the plane I had no trouble zonking out for several hours in the hotel last night. Breakfast was a mix of regular US items (scrambled eggs and bacon) plus some asian delights such as fried noodles and dumplings.
Hooperkid, Video Monkey and I moseyed over to the Suntec convention center to see how progress was going on the WCG setup. It's all very much under construction, but it is gonna be COOL. Master Chief is due to make an appearance on Sunday and I have vowed to risk a caning by grabbing his ass. (Such things are frowned upon here, as it is considered an insult to one's modesty).
Then the three of us cabbed it to Little India which was SUPER fun. We went to a Hindu temple, a Buddist temple and a mosque. I remembered to remove my shoes, but neglected to leave my "Summer Colada" Slurpee outside and the temple chick got pissed at me. Right there in front of the 50 foot seated Buddha! I didn't mean to be blasphemous, I just forgot it was in my hand.
Anyway there were interesting sights and delightful smells. I could totally live here. The one bad thing was I saw a giant cockroach (like 2 inches long!) and that was icky. It is super muggy here so I took a blazing hot bath when I got back to my room (my hotel provides not only bath salts, but a rubber ducky) so when I got out into the airconditioning it was fabulously cool. We're going to go to sushi tonight. I want to go to one of the numerous karaoke bars, but Video Monkey catagorically refuses to do karaoke and hooperkid claims that in order to partake he must be "hammered beyond hammered." Note to self: Get hooperkid hammered.
Check the photo album for a slice of Singapore thus far... |
