TriXie Goes to College

This Saturday I'll be doing a presentation about community and stuff at UCLA as part of a graduate school conference called iFutures: Systems, Selves, Society.

If you live in the LA area, and can give up your Saturday morning cartoons, I'd love to see some friendly faces in the crowd. I'm super nervous and would definitely appreciate the moral support!!

Here are the details: It's from 9 - 10:30am at the Northwest Campus Auditorium on the UCLA campus. It's free to get in, but there's some sort of parking cost.

If you can't make it, do you have any advice for me? Besides picturing the audience in their skivvies? Wink

GDC bookended by barf

I was a bad little blogger at GDC. I should have blogged things as they happened, and now it's been a few days. So, here are some memorable um … moments from this year's Game Developers Conference:

  • On the flight to San Francisco the kid sitting behind Major Nelson puked.
  • Too Human press reception: I hung out with Brian and Michael from Kotaku. They chuckled politely at my snarky comments until finally Brian said: "That's enough out of you." I saw two famous TV game journalists. One I adore and the other I can't stand. Why? Because he's such an arrogant douchebag that he actually looks like he smells bad.
  • Went to the Keynote with kikikat who was also staying with me at the Marriott. We got along great and she stayed on her side of the bed.
  • Rode to the Meet n Eat at In n Out in a limo with Major Nelson, e, kiki, and PiX3LMonkey. Because that's how the Major rolls.
  • Learned from some SFPD officers that you can actually be fined for cursing—as long as you offend four or more people. They wouldn't write me a ticket, but one of San Francisco's finest did offer to get me drunk and handcuff me… Are they allowed to do that?
  • I didn't get into one of the parties because a certain marketing dude whose name rhymes with Romfarbi wouldn't allow 'press' in there. But here's what I heard: They threw a party and invited developers from other companies so they could try to poach them! Weak.
  • Hung out in the lobby bar at the Marriott where much Jack and Coke was imbibed. Got back to my room at 4am where Jack decided to reappear.
  • Thursday went to the Career Pavilion to make a video. Some companies refused to participate because they have to run everything through PR. LAME.
  • Women in Gaming event Thursday night: Take 12 pink-shirted GamerchiX and mix with a bunch of skinny unkempt dev dorks there for the free drinks. Shake gently.
  • XNA Party. It's basically prom night for game developers. I got busted by a famous programmer with a famous artist's hand on my tush. American McGee told me I'm a filthy beast, but I would like to report that his bellybutton is placed freakishly high on his torso. (Yes a bunch of us were comparing navels). I met James Silva (of Dishwasher fame) and his sister. His sis was put off gaming when an ex-boyfriend became a WoW addict, but I gave her my card and hopefully we can reintroduce her to the joys of gaming. I finally met my boss' boss' boss' boss. I don't THINK I said anything too stupid…
  • On the flight to Seattle the kid behind ME puked. I immediately sent Major a text message: "You're not going to believe this... The kid behind me on the plane? Yeah." He wrote back "hahahahahahaha!" I blame him.

Ghosts of GDC's Past

Well it's GDC time again and I can't help but wonder (ooh did I just have a Carrie Bradshaw moment?) what sort of trouble I'll get into this year. We have a GDC blog on Xbox.com, but my boss says I have to keep it clean. You want the real dirt? Here's where you'll find it. Here are some dirt highlights from the past three GDC's:

2005 Microsoft Party
BTW the 'coraltini' and 'fin and tonic' at the Aqua party were good, but the 'Dev Punch' was better--tasted just like Kool Aid. And this morning, I feel like it was Jonestown Kool Aid. Oy.

2006 Sony Party
The partygoers? Besides a contingent of Xboxers doing recon there were boys, boys, boys. All of whom had to fly by and staredown into PMS Tart's cleavage. Oh, and why am I awake right now? Some as*hole from Atari drunk text messaged me at 3:30am and I can't get back to sleep!*

2007 Microsoft Party
Seriously, I totally love my job and there are great people, but how many hours can you be pinched, groped, and ogled before you get pissed off? The answer is three. The last straw was when a random dude from EA Canada stuck his tongue down my throat! My big Xbox bros Mark and Mark said they'd have him thrown out, but I don't need that kinda trouble.

Anyway, off to San Francisco tomorrow morning with a plane full of dotcommers: Major Nelson, Video Monkey, piX3lmonkey, SoozyQ, and editer. Watch this space!

*I still less than three the Atari a-hole though his hole is no longer at Atari.

Oh yeah, I'm an American Idol

At least on my Xbox 360 via Karaoke Revolution presents American Idol Encore. I played the short tournament (8 songs) and won, and then was mystified and annoyed when i didn't unlock the American Idol achievement. Maj had confided that he had the same thing happen and we wondered if it was broken. But NO... you have to play the FULL tournament which is 18 freakin songs, plus suffering through Randy calling you "dawg", Paula emoting, and Simon being all.... Simony. (For the record I have never watched the show. Not. Even. Once.)

But finally, I was most triumphant and unlocked that bad boy for a whopping 50 Gamerscore!

Community Confidential this week

Check out this week's episode of Community Confidential on Inside Xbox. Vicious696 is my special co-host and we tell all about what's happening in the Xbox community this week.

We shot in the lobby of the O Hotel in downtown Los Angeles last week when Video Monkey and I were there for Grammy stuff. Let me know what you think. Do you like co-hosts? (AceyBongos was on last week) Do you like simple ones shot in the studio or the 'on location' ones?

At the Grammy's

Wow it was an amazing day at the Gifting Lounge at the Grammy's.  Me and the Video Monkey were hanging out watching the celebs play Rock Band. Here's what happened:

  • Miley Cyrus came by and played drums. She said "That is SO FUN! I get this game? Holla!!"  Her mom was with her and they were both very sweet and gracious.
  • Dierks Bentley, who is nominated for 4 Grammy Awards in the Country music category was so unassuming and humble that you wouldn't know he's famous. He played guitar and I overheard him say "I'm all about the Halo 3." and "We have Guitar Hero on our tour bus." Dude loves his 360.
  • Brad Paisley cruised by and posed for pics with the tricked-out Xbox 360 guitar, but declined to join us for some rockage. Sad face.
  • Kelis didn't bring any milkshakes, but she did rock the guitar on "Roxanne," and had a big grin on her face the whole time.
  • Heroes star Dania Ramirez was stunningly lovely and had a great time playing "Say It Ain't So" on drums.
  • Nate Mendel, bassist from the Foo Fighters stopped by, but didn't play. He's got an Xbox 360 at home.
  • Taylor Hawkins, Foo Fighter drummers did want to rock however, and I got to play with him! He played drums on "Roxanne". I played bass (on Easy), and John and Sean from Harmonix completed our band. Taylor played on Easy and failed out, but we saved him. Harmonix boyz say real drummer often fail on easy because ironically they're too good.
  • Jason Bateman came by, and with some encouragement/nagging sat down at the drum kit and did a surprisingly good job on "Creep". He claims he hasn't played video games since like 1982, but I don't believe him. He was really funny and charming and gave us chocolate. I heart Jason Bateman.
  • The Plain White T's, nominated for their song "Hey there Delilah" stopped by and played "Say It Ain't So". They did an awesome job and were very cool.
